Yoga apparel falls into the category of form-fitting clothing. During yoga practice, you’ll likely sweat quite a bit, and many poses involve stretching, so the fabric should offer excellent moisture-wicking and breathability, along with good elasticity and stretch.

Yoga apparel falls into the category of form-fitting clothing. During yoga practice, you’ll likely sweat quite a bit, and many poses involve stretching, so the fabric should offer excellent moisture-wicking and breathability, along with good elasticity and stretch.

Nylon: Currently one of the most commonly available fabrics for yoga apparel, nylon excels in both abrasion resistance and elasticity—qualities that perfectly meet the demands of yoga practice. To further enhance the fabric’s stretch and recovery, manufacturers typically blend 5% to 10% spandex into the yarn during production.

Polyester (polyester fiber): On the market, some yoga apparel is still made from polyester or a blend of polyester and spandex. While polyester offers good strength and abrasion resistance, garments made from this fabric have very limited breathability, which may make them less suitable for practicing yoga in the sweltering heat of summer. However, polyester‑based yoga wear typically comes at a lower price point than nylon‑based options.

Cotton: Cotton fabrics offer excellent moisture absorption and breathability, feeling soft and comfortable without any restrictive sensation. However, they lag behind synthetic fibers like nylon in terms of abrasion resistance; with prolonged wear or repeated washing, they may shrink or wrinkle to some extent. Pure cotton yoga apparel tends to be more expensive than the other two options.
